NEW DELHI:
The West Bengal Government has ordered closure of schools from tomorrow, April 20. The decision to shut down schools has been taken after considering the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases. The government has also announced the summer vacation for government schools from May 7. Till date, students of Classes 10, 12 and teachers were attending the schools.
Physical classes for all the students were cancelled last year due to the onslaught of coronavirus and learning continued online. From February 12, schools in West Bengal had reopened after a gap of 11 months.
Soon after CBSE cancelled exams for the students of Class 10 and postponed Class 12 exams, the West Bengal Government said an appropriate decision will be taken in view of the spurt in coronavirus cases giving priority to the health of students who will sit for higher secondary and secondary examinations of the state board. The exams are scheduled to start in June. "The government will certainly take a decision in the interest of students at the appropriate time considering the COVID-19 situation," State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee had earlier said.
Until now, the board has not taken any decision pertaining to the cancellation or deferment of board exams 2021 in the state.
With the rapid increase in active COVID-19 cases, several states and Union Territories have shut down schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions. States including Haryana, Odisha, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan have closed down schools and colleges in the state.
