University of Liverpool becomes second UK institution to start campus in India

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will hand over Letter of Intent to UK’s Liverpool University tomorrow.
After Southampton University, the University of Liverpool has become the second United Kingdom (UK) institute to establish a campus in India. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will hand over the Letter of Intent (LoI) to the university in an official ceremony tomorrow, May 26.
Recently, the Illinois Institute of Technology received a green signal to start a campus in Mumbai, first US university to grant degrees. University of Western Australia (UWA) has also submitted applications for setting up multiple branch campuses across the country, with a hub in Mumbai.
Southampton University is already offering BSc and MSc programmes in its Delhi campus, from the 2025-26 session.
Over 50 foreign universities applied to UGC for campuses in India and three global institutions are currently running, Pradhan told Rajya Sabha in April this year. Two Australian universities, Deakins and Wollongong, are the first ones to set up campuses in Gujarat’s GIFT city.

The university vice-chancellor Tim Jones, British high commissioner Lindy Cameron, University Grants Commission (UGC) interim chair and higher education secretary of Ministry of Education Vineet Joshi will be present during the event.
In 2023, the commission notified the regulations on setting up of foreign university campuses in India. As per UGC foreign university guidelines , the institutions can offer certificate, diploma, degree, research, and other programmes.
