UGC directs colleges to start 'Student Service Centres', sets guidelines for physical fitness
UGC Guidelines: The Students Services Centres (SSC) will function as a single-window support system, equipped with trained counsellors, mental health professionals, and physical fitness experts.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to establish a Students Services Centres (SSC) to address issues related to stress, emotional adjustment, academic pressure, and mental health among students. It has also framed new guidelines for promoting physical fitness, sports participation, and the psychological and emotional well-being of students in colleges across the country.
The centres will function as a single-window support system, equipped with trained counsellors, mental health professionals , and physical fitness experts, UGC said in an official notification.
“The SSC must have necessary resources like competent physical and mental health counselors, physical and mental health experts, and physical, physio- psychological assessment tools to inform the students, assess them, guide them, and provide necessary counselling interventions to make them feel enabled, energized and independent functionaries capable of pursuing their career goals,” it added.

'Credit-based evaluation system for sports'
It will also provide services through in-person counselling , online consultations, helplines, and group sessions, while also maintaining records of vulnerable or stress-prone students to ensure timely support and reduce dropout rates.
Emphasizing on the need for vibrant campus life, the commission has urged universities to provide opportunities for academic and co-curricular engagement, cultural activities, internships, field training, and community service.
“These initiatives aim to help students develop personal aspirations while fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment,” the UGC said.
The UGC has also suggested to colleges that participation in sports and physical activities be integrated into the credit-based evaluation system, ensuring that every student engages in physical activity as part of their academic journey. Institutions are also encouraged to promote yoga, meditation, and adventure activities to improve overall student health and resilience.
