UGC adds new engineering, medicine, other degrees; revises duration of some courses

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced new undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) degree courses and has also released a notice on revised course duration for some programmes. As per the official notice, the new programmes are added under engineering, technology, medicine and surgery, sports.
As per the UGC notice regarding the specification of new degrees, “Any degree which is not mentioned in the notification and its subsequent amendment shall the rendered as unrecognized by UGC. The notification and its amendments are available on the UGC website - ugc.ac.in.”

The commission with the approval of the central government had notified the third amendment in the said UGC notification on the specification of degrees. The new degree - Bachelor of Sowa Rigra Medicine and Surgery - under the head of medicine and surgery, Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Health and Allied Sciences, Pharmacy, Paramedical, Nursing will be of five and a half years of duration.
Students who have completed Class 12 are eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Sowa Rigra Medicine and Surgery.
The UGC has also reduced the course duration of Master of Computer Applications (MCA) from three years to only two years. The course duration of Bachelor of Occupational Therapy has been increased from four years to four and a half years.
