NEW DELHI: Pondicherry University student Rabeeha Abdurahim, was asked to leave the convocation venue while President Ram Nath Kovind was there. She was led out by the police, allegedly for wearing hijab, reported The Times of India.
The convocation was held on Monday, December 23, and Kovind was chief guest.
Abdurahim was to receive a gold medal in M.A mass communication. She rejected the gold medal once she was allowed inside the convocation after President left.
“ I don’t know why I was sent out (from the venue). But I learnt that when the students inside asked the police they said ‘maybe, she’s wearing the scarf in a different way’, Abdurahim told TOI. “ That is also a reason I feel that they have sent me out. But nobody told blatantly on my face that this is why we kicked you out. They have not given me any reason,” she added.
A section of university students, including M.SC Electronic Media gold medallist Karthika B Kurup, had boycotted the Pondicherry University convocation as a protest against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) . The President had given the final assent for CAA on December 12.
Abdurahim was not part of this protest.
Meanwhile, a PhD scholar, Mohammed Tariq, who had lost his hand during a violent clash between students and police in Aligarh Muslim University has been appointed as an assistant professor at the university on an adhoc basis.
