NEW DELHI: Eleven students from 11 states of the country have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), in the Supreme Court demanding postponement of JEE Main and NEET 2020. Nearly 25 lakh students have registered to appear for the national level engineering and medical entrance examinations scheduled to be held in September.
The students have approached the apex court demanding that the two examinations be postponed to December amidst growing cases of COVID-19. The students have demanded postponement over safety inside and outside the exam centres and other issues including transport facilities.
Earlier this week, the India Wide Parents Association (IWPA) had written to the education minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ seeking relief.
The group urged Pokhriyal to postpone JEE 2020 and NEET 2020 and stated that they do not want cancellation of the exam. The letter to the education minister read: “What we are demanding is a postponement in this unprecedented time to avoid any loss in any form be it life or career,” reads the letter.
JEE Main, NEET 2020 dates
The JEE Main and NEET 2020 which were scheduled for July, were postponed to September 1-6, and September 13, respectively. Around 25 lakh students will be sitting for the two national level exams, with NEET 2020 receiving 15 lakh applications, JEE Main, around nine lakh.
The letter stated that due to increasing COVID-19 cases, there would be many students who would have tested positive days before the exam. In such a scenario, it will be a risk to let them attempt the exam with others, allowing them to take the exam will also not be in the best interest of these students.
