No IIT Bombay ‘campus’ in Japan, reports ‘incorrect’, clarifies institute

IIT Bombay will start a centre with Japan’s Tohoku University with a dual degree PhD programme.
There will be no Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay campus in Japan, the top-tier institute clarified and denied news reports claiming the opening of a new international ‘campus’. “A news about IIT Bombay opening a campus in Japan has appeared in a few publications. This news is incorrect,” the IIT told Careers360.
IIT Bombay, in fact, informed that its venture into the country of cherry blossoms will instead start with a dual degree PhD programme this year. It will set up a centre with Japan’s Tohoku University in the next year. Presently, a PhD programme will be offered. In due course, a joint masters' programme will be offered, the institute added.
“There will be no IITB 'campus' in Japan,” IITB asserted.
Notably, this will be the first-ever overseas centre of the IIT. Two other IITs – IIT Delhi and IIT Madras – have already started their international campuses in Abu Dhabi and Zanzibar.
IIT Bombay's ties with international universities
In April this year, the two universities signed an agreement to set up the Tohoku University–IIT Bombay Joint Institute of Excellence (JIE). The partnership focused on academic and research collaboration, as well as industry-academia partnerships and joint initiatives. The two institutions also agreed to establish a dual doctoral degree programme.
In other news, IIT Bombay also suspended ties with Turkish universities over Turkey’s support to Pakistan during ‘Operation Sindoor’.
