NMC renews 5-year recognition for 2 Assam medical colleges: CM Himanta Sarma

NEW DELHI: The Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has recognized Assam Medical College and Guwahati Medical College for another 5 years, with 170 and 156 seats respectively in the MBBS course.
Based on the the virtual assessment of the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) conducted by the NMC during the MBBS practical exams held on April 3, physical verification of facilities, Aadhaar based biometric attendance, the college was found deficient in terms of teaching faculty and non-functioning cameras.
However, in a letter dated on March 23, 2023, the principal Assam Medical College informed the NMC’s 1st appeal committee that the vacancy in the ENT department was a matter of concern. However, all vacant posts were filled and deficiencies pointed out were rectified, including fully-functional cameras.

Following the submission made by the AMCH principal, the NMC has approved the extension of recognition to 5 years.
Similarly, the NMC pointed out that the faculty attendance is not marked on the Aadhaar based biometric attendance in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. The principal of the college in a dated June 21 said that till 11 AM today 434 faculty out of the 475 registered users have marked attendance in AEBAS.
After taking into consideration, the NMC has approved the continuation of recognition of 156 MBBS seats for 5 years.
The Assam cabinet recently proposed a 10% reservation for NRI , NRI-sponsored candidates for those applicants who cleared NEET UG 2023. It has also decided to increase the reservation for 6 communities of the Other Backward Castes (OBCs) and More Other Backward Castes (MOBCs) for MBBS admission in Assam medical colleges.
