Mumbai University stops admissions at 229 colleges over NAAC, NBA accreditation, CDCs
The list of 229 is on the Mumbai University official website. In addition to putting the 2025-26 admissions on hold, MU is also imposing a fine on each of the colleges.
NEW DELHI: In an unprecedented move aimed at tightening academic standards, the University of Mumbai has suspended first-year admissions for 229 affiliated colleges, starting from the academic year 2025-26. The decision comes after these institutions failed to comply with mandatory accreditation and governance norms, despite repeated reminders from the university.
Of the 229 colleges, 156 have not secured accreditation or re-accreditation of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) or the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Accreditation, required under Section 110(4) of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, is essential for ensuring academic quality and institutional credibility, the university has earlier said in circulars and notices.
The remaining 73 colleges were barred from admissions for failing to establish college development committees (CDC), which is mandated under Section 97 of the same Act. The CDC is crucial for institutional planning, quality control, and governance.
Despite repeated circulars, directives, and reminders, these colleges did not comply, prompting strict action from the university, University of Mumbai said in a statement. Registration for Mumbai University admissions 2025 started two days ago.
Mumbai University: Public list and penalties
In addition to the suspension of admissions, the university has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each non-compliant college. Officials stated that these steps were necessary to uphold academic integrity and governance standards. “Colleges were given ample time and multiple notices. This decision safeguards the interests of students and the university’s reputation,” said a senior official from the management council in the statement.
The complete list of affected colleges has been made available on the official University of Mumbai website. Students, parents, and stakeholders have been advised to consult the list carefully before proceeding with the admission process.
