Madhya Pradesh: Online open-book exams for most college students

NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh's higher education department has asked universities to conduct their undergraduate and postgraduate examinations for intermediate semesters online and in open-book format due to rising cases of COVID-19 infection in the country. This comes after the Madhya Pradesh shut schools till April 15. The universities have been instructed to hold exams over May-June.
The MP higher education department has asked the higher education institutions to conduct the first-year, second-year graduation and second semester PG examination in open book examination (OBE) mode in June. Universities will upload question papers on their websites students will download and solve. More detailed guidelines will follow, says the government notification.
For the final-year undergraduate and fourth-semester postgraduate courses, Madhya Pradesh government has asked institutions to conduct examinations in pen-and-paper mode in May 2021.
Last year, several universities were compelled to hold open book exams, most notably, Delhi University whose examination system was plagued by glitches causing widespread panic. Students had protested against it as well. DU’s mock-tests were replete with errors and problems. Later, many discovered they had been marked absent or zero for exams they had written.

The department has also asked universities to declare results of the final-year and final-semester UG, PG examination by June-end.
The evaluation of students of mid-semester will be based on 50 percent marks obtained in the OBE exam and 50 percent weightage will be given to marks obtained in the previous year and previous semester.
By the end of March, several states, including Punjab , Uttar Pradesh and Telangana , had shut colleges and universities to control the spread of the coronavirus.
