Karnataka education department to reserve 1% teacher jobs for transgenders

Check Now testNEW DELHI: The Karnataka government has taken a policy decision to reserve 1% jobs for transgender in the education department. After the Karnataka Police department, the state education department for the first time will be recruiting transgender for teachers' posts.
As per the draft notification issued by the Karnataka government, “Not less than 1 per cent of the vacancies shall be filled up by the transgender candidates in each category.” A total of 15,000 vacancies have been notified for teachers posts in various government schools across Karnataka.

This move is as part of the Amendment of Karnataka Civil Service (General Recruitment) Rules 1977 to promote gender equality. The amendment will provide one per cent government jobs to transgender persons.
According to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules 2020, transgender persons have to get a certificate from the district magistrate. This certificate is a necessary requirement while applying to jobs under this quota.
Karnataka teachers recruitment 2022: Eligibility criteria
There has been no relaxation in the eligibility criteria for transgenders as per the notice issued by the state government.
- They will have a graduate degree with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks and a two-year diploma in elementary education or a diploma in special education. Or
- Graduate degree with minimum 50% marks and BEd or Bachelors in Special Education. Or
- PUC with 50% marks and four-year Bachelor of Elementary Education or four-year of BEd. SC, ST, OBC, PwD candidates should have scored 45% marks. And
- Should have cleared Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) conducted by Karnataka or the Government of India (CTET).

In December 2021, the Karnataka state police department announced recruiting transgenders for the posts of 'Special Reserve Sub-Inpsector' (KSRP and IRP) to local and residual cadre. Candidates were allowed to apply for the PSI post till January 18, 2022.
