As per the JEE Main marking scheme, candidates are awarded four marks for each correct answer in multiple-choice questions (MCQs). One mark is deducted for each incorrect response.
No marks are deducted for unattempted questions. For numerical value questions, candidates receive four marks for a correct response, and there is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
After evaluation, the total marks obtained by a candidate in each subject are added to calculate the JEE Main raw score . However, the NTA does not use the raw marks directly to prepare the JEE Main final result, as the exam is conducted in different shifts with varying difficulty levels.
JEE Main 2026: Normalisation, percentile method
To ensure fairness, NTA uses the JEE Main normalisation process, which calculates percentile scores. These scores indicate the proportion of candidates in a shift who scored equal to or below a particular candidate.
The NTA conducts JEE Main 2026 in two sessions. The JEE Main 2026 session 2 is scheduled to be held from April 2 to April 9, 2026.
For candidates who appear in more than one session, the best percentile score is taken into account for the final JEE Main result. The All India Rank (AIR) and eligibility for JEE Advanced are determined based on percentile scores, not raw marks.
