Jamia Millia Islamia opens centre of excellence for professional skill development

NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) inaugurated its Centre of Excellence for Professional Skill Development at University Polytechnic. The facility was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Mazhar Asif in the presence of academicians, industry representatives, and students.
The acting principal of University Polytechnic, MA Khan, outlined the centre’s role in connecting academia and industry needs. He said that the centre's role is to connect academia with changing industry requirements and global technological developments.
The event included addresses by registrar Mohammad Mahtab Alam Rizvi, dean of the faculty of engineering and technology, Mini Shaji Thomas, and Sundresan Narayanan, managing director of Carrier Air-conditioning Ltd.
Narayanan spoke about the company’s perspective and referred to the innovations of Willis Carrier, the founder of Carrier. Mini Thomas highlighted the importance of academic-industry collaboration for graduate preparedness. Rizvi described the Centre as a platform for innovation and skill development. Mazhar Asif commended the initiative as central to JMI’s goal of developing skilled professionals.

As per the official press release, mementoes were presented to the dignitaries to mark the occasion, and thanks were extended to Carrier Air-conditioning Ltd., including representatives Shadab and Sujeet Ranjan.
The programme concluded with the National Anthem and a vote of thanks delivered by Ranjan from United Way Delhi, one of the key partners in the Centre’s development. “This newly inaugurated Centre of Excellence is not just a milestone for JMI—it’s a launchpad for youth empowerment, industry integration, and socio-economic transformation,” the institute said.
