IIT Madras startup Plugzmart develops multiple-CMS EV charging platform
Plugzmart, incubated at IIT Madras in 2019, develops a charging technology for electric vehicles which can be used for multiple brands.
Plugzmart, a startup incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), has developed an electric vehicle (EV) charging platform that can connect with multiple Charging Management Systems (CMS). A multi-CMS ‘Relay’ platform ensures that if one network experiences issues, others continue to operate.
Plugzmart’s EV charging solution allows vehicles from multiple brands to utilise charging services through an “intelligent middleware”. This technology overcomes the limitations of having only one type of CMS charging station in India.
The IIT Madras startup connects all CMS platforms with a single dashboard, therefore simplifying the process. Plugzmart identifies charging session details with “accurate” billing and session management. This system is for both technical and business requirements, ensuring backend visibility.
IIT Madras Plugzmart: New charging solutions
According to an official press statement, the new Plugzmart EV platform offers the following advantages to users:
- Chargers can operate across different e-mobility service providers by connecting to multiple CMS networks.
- Operational for multiple networks and customer groups to ensure active revenue.
- Plugzmart middleware routes charging sessions to the appropriate CMS.
- The technology allows charging point operators to switch among different CMS platforms so they can avoid being tied to one CMS provider.
- The middleware can easily connect with Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) chargers with no hardware changes.

Speaking about the EV charging technology, Raghavendar TS, director of the software business unit, said, “Our solution maximises the visibility of each installed charger by allowing it to appear on multiple networks. This boosts charger utilisation, increases ROI for charger owners, and gives EV users more options — encouraging widespread EV adoption across cities and rural areas.”
