IIT Kanpur holds 10-day orientation for Y25 batch; 1,225 UG and 1,550 PG students join for 2025-26

IITK: The orientation was organised by the ICS, supported by nine counsellors, three psychiatrists, and over 600 student volunteers. The mentor-mentee system and hostel units were highlighted for anti-ragging and transition support.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has conducted its orientation programme for the incoming Y25 batch. The institute has admitted around 1,225 undergraduate and 1,550 postgraduate students for the academic year 2025-26. UG students reported to campus on July 21, while PG students joined on July 24.
The institute began the 10-day orientation with a formal welcome session, where the director of IIT Kanpur, Manindra Agrawal, dean of academic affairs, Ashoke De, the dean of students’ affairs Pratik Sen, dean of digital infrastructure and automation Nisanth Nair, and head of Institute Counselling Service Santanu Misra addressed the students. They spoke about the institute’s academic structure, key processes, and student support systems.
PG students attended additional sessions on the PG Manual, conducted by associate dean of academic affairs Abheejeet Mohapatra and Senate Postgraduate Committee chairperson Sudhansu Sekhar Singh. Academic units also organised sessions to familiarise students with their respective departments.
A separate session was held for parents of UG students. Over 3,000 parents attended online and offline. Psychiatrist Alok Bajpai addressed the gathering. The director answered questions on hostel arrangements, campus safety, healthcare, and anti-ragging measures. He also shared updates on infrastructure projects including upcoming hostels and plans for a medical school.

Students introduced to campus resources and initiatives
Students were introduced to Student Gymkhana, campus clubs and societies, the Gender Cell, Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre, internship and international exchange opportunities, Technopark, wellness services, and cybersecurity. Campus tours, lab visits, science exhibitions, cultural events and other group activities were also conducted.
The orientation was organised by the Institute Counselling Service (ICS), which includes nine full-time counsellors, three consultant psychiatrists, and more than 600 student volunteers. The mentor-mentee system and hostel-level support units were highlighted as part of the anti-ragging framework and transition support.
Speaking on the occasion, Manindra Agrawal said, “The Y25 batch brings exceptional talent and energy to IIT Kanpur. Our orientation program is designed not only to prepare students for academic rigour but also to help them embrace the collaborative, multidisciplinary culture of the institute while ensuring access to mentorship, resources, and opportunities. We welcome the Y25 batch and look forward to their contributions.”
