IIT Hyderabad director BS Murty appointed as president of Indian Institute of Metals
Indian Institute of Metals promotes metallurgical and manufacturing education through membership, courses and workshops.
B S Murty, director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, has been appointed as president of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM). The appointment was announced on Saturday in Kolkata, during the annual general meeting of IIM. Murty’s appointment as the president will be effective from August 1, 2025.
IIT Hyderabad director Murty accepted the IIM presidency from Sajjan Jindal, JSW chairman and managing director of the JSW Group. Murty is an “internationally reputed metallurgist” who has spent four decades towards metallurgical education, research, and innovation.
The Indian Institute of Metals is an organisation which represents metallurgical and materials engineering professionals across academia, industry, and research, according to an official statement. The institute has been operational for more than 79 years, offering short-term certificate courses and workshops about the industrial manufacturing framework.

The newly appointed IIM president has made contributions in areas such as non-equilibrium materials processing, high entropy alloys, and advanced materials development as an academic and researcher.
IIM conducts the Associate Membership Examination (AMIIM), which is equivalent to a BTech in Metallurgical Engineering. It is designed for working professionals who have relevant experience in the field without a formal degree.
The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad has recently marked developments in geospatial research with DIGIPIN , a “national-scale addressing system for India”. The institute offers admission to a variety of programmes like Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Master of Technology (MTech), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), along with courses in design and arts as well.
