IIMK’s new batches of PGP and MBA LSM will be over 50 percent female

NEW DELHI: More than half the new students in the postgraduate programme at Indian Institute of Management,(IIM) Kozhikode, will be women. The new batch joining in the upcoming academic year will be 52% female, IIM Kozhikode has said.

Further, about 62% of the admissions in the newly-launched MBA in liberal studies and management programme are female students. A total of 40 students have joined the new course.

A virtual orientation session will be conducted for the new students before the commencement of the classes.

The group of 492 students in the 24th batch of the programme is also the most diverse in terms of academic backgrounds. Where the common aptitude test, or CAT, through which the IIMs admit students has overwhelmingly favoured engineers, in IIM Kozhikode’s new batch, 40% of the students come from non-engineering backgrounds having graduated in architecture, arts, science, commerce and medicine.

Around 65% of the new batch holds substantial work experience in automobile, banking, durable goods, engineering, pharmaceuticals industries.

Online semester

This year, due to the COVID-19 crisis, the institute has started online classes for the senior batches from July 1. Classes for the newly admitted students are scheduled to commence from August 12.

The institute, after assessing the situation, intends to bring the students back to the campus in a phased manner maintaining all social distancing and quarantine norms.

Plans to restart the on-campus academic activities are also underway, an official statement from IIMK said.

Welcoming the batch, Debashis Chatterjee , director of IIMK said "There has been a steady rise to our commitment to ensuring gender diversity in this past decade and the journey towards creating equal opportunities in society and business, the empowerment & advancement of women is fulfilling for an Institute like IIMK,”

Emphasising on the need for diversity, Chatterjee further said: “Uncertainties and complexities of managing in the current business world require a working manager to be able to approach a problem from multiple perspectives and by nurturing the diversity of thought in its classrooms by consciously choosing to create a diverse learning environment, IIMK aims to equip its students with the knowledge and experience that will be essential in sustaining them throughout their professional career.”
