IGNOU, IIT Bombay launch AI translation platform to enable multilingual access

IGNOU’s Project Udaan initiates the integration of optical character recognition (OCR), layout preservation, domain-specific glossaries, and human-in-the-loop editing to deliver translation of academic and technical content into regional languages.
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has launched Project Udaan’s AI-driven translation platform. The ceremony was held today at IGNOU headquarters in the presence of senior academic leadership.
According to the official IGNOU statement, Project Udaan is an initiative that integrates optical character recognition (OCR), layout preservation, domain-specific glossaries, and human-in-the-loop editing to deliver translation of academic and technical content into Indian languages.
The event was chaired by the vice chancellor of IGNOU and attended by school divisions, heads, the registrar, and other members. From IIT Bombay, Ganesh Rama-Krishnan, Bank of Baroda chair professor in digital entrepreneurship, and principal investigator of Project Udaan was present.
According to The Indian Express report, the partnership aims to outline the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, with an emphasis on multilingual education, digital access, and academic equity.
“In a significant step toward promoting inclusive and equitable education, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay ( IIT Bombay ) have signed an agreement to collaborate on Project Udaan, an advanced Al-driven translation platform,” the official IGNOU statement read.
The partnership aims to make IGNOU’s expansive education resources available in multiple regional languages and expand access for learners across the country.
