NEW DELHI: Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur have designed a face shield to prevent health workers from getting infected by the coronavirus.
The researchers at the IIT Jodhpur’s Automated Manufacturing Laboratory developed the 3-D printed face shields that can be indexed and given to doctors, nursing staff and medical staff treating coronavirus patients.
IIT Jodhpur in a statement said that the face shield is made of “transparent protective plastic covering attached to indigenously designed spectacle frames like 3-D printed fixtures and elastic thread.”
The face shield was developed by a team led by Kaushal A. Desai and included three students - Ankit Agarwal, Shubham Vaishnav and Pratik Sorathiya.
The statement said that the IIT Jodhpur has approached the district authorities for their approval to use it in hospitals and health centres and also asked for feedback on the prototype. “The design is still in the prototyping stage and needs to be tested and certified by the appropriate authorities,” the statement added.
As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has climbed to 1637 in the country, the demand for Personal Protective Equipment has grown manifold.
While doctors and medical staff are busy attending the COVID-19 patients in hospitals, they are increasingly in danger of being infected themselves.
