DUSU joint secretary 'slaps' professor at BR Ambedkar College; teachers' groups say 'can't function like this'

Teachers’ organisations have condemned the attack on a senior teacher at BR Ambedkar College (BRAC) by DUSU joint secretary Deepika Jha and other members of ABVP while he was teaching inside the classroom.

The criticism by the Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) and Yogesh Singh, vice chancellor of the University of Delhi comes after the joint secretary barged in the college with 50 students and slapped Sujit Kumar, professor at BRAC.

Jha along with other students, also reportedly manhandled several teachers and pressured them to demand the resignation of the convener of the disciplinary committee.

Recently, ABVP members were also involved in other incidents of violence, where they assaulted students. Coincidentally, Sujit Kumar was the convenor of the disciplinary committee, and BRAC was investigating these cases.

Both the DTF and the VC of DU have urged the government to take immediate and exemplary action against the culprits involved in this act of violence. They have demanded stringent action against the culprits.

“Such an aggression and assault against a teacher inside the college building create a sense of fear and insecurity among the University community, especially the teaching fraternity,” the vice chancellor of DU said.

The DTF also stated that all members of the disciplinary committee have resigned, adding: “teachers cannot function if they cannot be protected.” The CCTV footage of the same is available in the principal’s office, the federation said.

Shocked over the non-involvement of police, the federation said: “We condemn this act of the DUSU President and Joint Secretary in the strongest terms. We find it absurd that the Police did not intervene effectively. We demand a University level inquiry on the matter and strict action against the student. DU cannot be lost to violence and mob culture.”
