IIM Ahmedabad had turned hostels on campus into micro-containment zones last.
NEW DELHI: The number of active cases of coronavirus at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad rose to 54 on Tuesday.
As many as 65 cases were reported on the IIMA campus in March alone. Out of those who tested positive for the infection, six have recovered, the IIMA official statement said.
Currently, 75 percent of infected people are asymptomatic and 90 percent of those who are symptomatic have no symptoms after 3-4 days of medication, the statement added.
These include mostly students but also other community members such as non-teaching staff, teachers and their family members.
Since September last year, the institute has been conducting RT-PCR tests free of cost on campus. So far, 4,018 tests have been conducted out of which 191 cases were found to be positive.
COVID-19 vaccine and precaution
The institute has also initiated a vaccination drive in collaboration with the AMC to immunize 550 community members at IIM Ahmedabad, IIMA statement said.
Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases on campus, the institute, on the directions of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), had converted seven hostel dorms into micro-containment zones. All infected, including asymptomatic people, have been isolated in these hostels.
To avoid further spread of COVID19, students have been asked to stay put in hostels and all common gathering areas. Those not adhering to social distancing or other precautionary measures like wearing will be penalised with a Rs 1000 fine.
At IIM-Udaipur , 27 people were tested positive for coronavirus who were shifted to a quarantine facility on campus. As many as 25 students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Gandhinagar were also found to be COVID-19 positive, ANI reported.
