NEW DELHI: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will hold special placement drives for those students whose job offers got cancelled due to the worldwide health and economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The human resource development minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank', said on social media: “I have appealed to all campus recruiters not to withdraw jobs offered to graduating students of technical education institutions.”
In his post, the minister said that, “The students to whom the jobs were offered during the placement drive are among the country's brightest minds and can help recruiters in times of crisis."
The HRD minister’ appeal came amid the news that recruiters have revoked the job offers of few students at the IITs and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) due to uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 crisis.
He also tweeted, “I have also asked all IIT directors to hold special placement drives for the students affected by cancelled job offers.”
Incidentally, the HRD minister had directed the directors of 23 IITs last week to ensure that campus placements are not affected due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation.
According to reports, the All IITs’ Placement Committee (AIPC) and IIT Delhi Director V. Ramgopal Rao had also reached out to all the campus recruiters, requesting them to not revoke the job offers made for the academic year 2019-20.
