Coronavirus: KVS to convert classrooms into isolation centres

NEW DELHI: With the increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the country, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has allowed “temporary” housing of suspected cases in its classrooms.
The KVS headquarters has directed all its regional offices to facilitate the use of classrooms of KV buildings on receipt of a formal request from any defence authority or district administration.
The joint commissioner of the area is to be informed where a KVS building is being converted into isolation wards.
It has at present 1,235 functional schools spread across 25 regions of the country, including the three in Kathmandu (Nepal), Tehran (Iran) and Moscow (Russia).
The KVS cater to the educational needs of the children of transferable central government employees including defence and paramilitary personnel by providing a common programme of education. As many as 13,15,708 students are enrolled in KVS.
Aiding in emergency
Earlier, the Human Resource Development minister had initiated the use of vacant hostels in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) for medical use by local district administrations.
The hostels where no students were staying were to be made available to contain the spread of coronavirus. There are 660 residential Navodaya Vidyalayas functioning in the country.
Higher education institutes like Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay have also set up quarantine centres for COVID-19 suspected cases.
As on Saturday, the number of active cases in the country has risen to 775. The deadly virus has claimed 19 lives in the country. 78 people have recovered and been discharged.
