COVID-19: IIT Kharagpur has decided to call back students who are facing problems with online classes. UG and PG students will return in phases.
NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur will call back students facing difficulties attending online classes at the earliest.
During a meeting held on July 5, the student's senate placed a representation and suggested that students be called back to the campus at the earliest as hundreds of them are facing problems due to uncertain internet connectivity.
The authorities asked the student's body to prepare a list of the number of such students facing issues relating to digital devices or internet connectivity.
"Those who are having financial constraints, we have sorted out their names. They will be asked to join the campus soon", said Drubajyoti Sen, dean of student affairs, IIT Kharagpur.
Like in all educational institutions, classes in technical institutions too were being held online as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of COVID-19. "We cannot accommodate everyone as COVID-19 is still on, but at least on a priority basis, those who have the urgency can be called back. So at the moment, prioritization is being done, and preparation of the list is on," said Sen.

The students who will be called to the campus are from both undergraduate level to postgraduate level.
Till now, a list of around 500 students has been prepared, the student's body is working and "we are trying that some of the students join the campus by next week. The students will be called back in phases", said Sen
Gradually we will allow them to come first. After that, as and when the situation eases, we will allow other students.
Around 750 to 800 PhD students joined the institute and are on the campus from December 2020, Sen said.
IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay have both lost faculty members to the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
