The All India Congress Committee announced that Congress president has appointed former JNUSU president as NSUI in-charge.
NEW DELHI: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) announced that the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed Kanhaiya Kumar as the new AICC incharge of Congress student wing, National Students Union of India (NSUI). Kumar served as the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), the student body of JNU.
“Honorable Congress president has appointed Shri Kanhaiya Kumar as AICC In-charge of National Students Union of India (NSUI), with immediate effect,” the AICC said in a statement.
Kumar has also been a leader of the All India Students Federation (AISF) and became JNUSU president in 2015 by winning the elections.
In 2016, Kumar was arrested by the Delhi Police in a sedition case. He was charged with shouting anti-national slogans in the JNU campus during an event. His arrest was followed by opposition from various parties and protests by students.
Neeraj Kundan serves as the NSUI president, currently. The organization was established as a national students’ body in 1971 by merging Kerala Students Union and a West Bengal’s student union.
NSUI has been active in various student-related issues including the changes in Delhi University, Ukraine war crisis, national entrance exams, BBC documentary row, college admissions, and more. Recently, NSUI staged a protest outside DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh's office over the inclusion of a course on Savarkar in the BA (Political Science) syllabus.
