An assistant professor has been accused of sexual harassment; videos of a clash that took place on campus have sparked widespread outrage
Karnataka police have booked a professor of Siddhartha Medical College in Nelamangala, Bengaluru, for sexual harassment charges for allegedly proposing to a female student in a classroom. The incident came to light when videos of this incident went viral on social media.
The Press Trust of India reported that the professor, an assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology, is seen in viral videos proposing to a student and claiming that she had conveyed her “feelings” to him, which the student denied.
In the videos, the student is seen rejecting the proposal and reacting angrily. She hits him with her slippers, and some other students also reportedly attacked the professor.
The professor has been booked for sexual harassment under Sections 74 (assault against a woman), 75(1) (sexual harassment), and 329(3) (criminal trespass) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), based on a complaint filed by the college principal, reports the Press Trust of India.

According to the FIR, the professor was accused of inappropriate behaviour and sexual harassment of female students, for which a complaint was lodged by the students. They demanded that action be taken against him. Following this, a notice was issued by the college, asking the professor to appear for an inquiry. During this period, he was barred from entering the college campus.
In a statement, police said that the professor allegedly did not comply with this notice and entered the campus on March 23. He has allegedly grabbed a female student's hand inappropriately.
The incident has caused disturbance in the academic environment of the college, said the FIR.
