AIBE 20 Notification 2025: BCI to announce exam dates, registration schedule soon

The Bar Council of India (BCI) will announce the All India Bar Examination (AIBE 2025) notification containing exam date, registration schedule, application process, eligibility criteria, syllabus, among other rules soon on its official website at allindiabarexamination.com.

According to the eligibility rule, law graduates or those appearing in the final year of the 3-year or 5-year LLB programmes without any backlog will be able to register for the AIBE 20 through the official portal.

The AIBE 20 is likely to be conducted in the first or second week of December, 2025, as per various media reports.

“Any candidate, whether currently a student or a graduate, who is studying or has passed out from a university or college that is not recognised/approved by the Bar Council of India, will not be eligible to appear for AIBE. It is the responsibility of the candidates to ensure their educational institution is duly recognised by the BCI,” the AIBE’s official website reads.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea challenging the registration fee for the AIBE charged by the BCI. The apex court said that the petitioner should first approach the BCI before coming to the court.

Advocate Sanyam Gandhi had filed a petition in the SC, challenging BCI’s fee structure for AIBE and argued that the bar council charges Rs 3,500 in addition other incidental charges from general, and Other Backward Classes (OBC) candidates.

The BCI also charges Rs 2,500 in addition to other incidental charges from Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, the petition added.

Is it compulsory to clear AIBE to practice law in India?

Yes, candidates aiming to practice law in India as lawyers must have to clear the bar examination, conducted by the BCI. It’s an open book exam held across 50 cities at 140 centres across the country.

The competitive exam is conducted to assess the basic level of knowledge of the law graduates or students. The pen and paper exam is conducted in a multi-choice model for three and a half hours.

“The All India Bar Examination is a post-enrolment examination where persons are initially said to be provisionally enrolled on an undertaking that they will pass the exam within 2 years of said enrolment,” the official notification reads.

Notably, there is no fixed number of terms to appear for the bar examination and candidates can appear as time as possible, as per the official notification.
