25 Assam schools have 0 students; those lacking ‘sustainable' enrolment will be merged, says Ranoj Pegu

Assam education minister shared data of government and provincialised schools having student enrolment less than 15 and 30.
NEW DELHI : 25 government schools in Assam have zero students, according to the data shared by state education minister Ranoj Pegu. The minister, while sharing the details on the number of schools with less than 15 and 30 student enrolment, said that those not having “sustainable” enrolment will be merged with the nearby schools.
As per the data which includes primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary government and provincialised schools, the highest number of schools with zero enrolment, 17, are located in Dima Hasao district followed by Karbi Anglong with 7 such schools.
Pegu said in a post on X, “No school is closed and no student is deprived of education. Schools without sustainable enrollment will be merged if they are nearby. Data on the number of schools with 15 and less than 30 pupils are given below,” and shared a list of such schools.

A total of 3,536 schools in Assam have up to 15 students each enrolled. Of total, 31 schools have only one student each while 65 schools have three each. 132 schools teach five students each while 327 have 10 students each enrolled. 397 schools have a total enrollment of 15 students each, the data showed. Dima Hasao district has the most number of such schools.
Moreover, over 500 schools in the state run classes for 16 students each while 626 schools teach 30 students each. Overall, a total of 7,736 schools have an enrollment between 16 and 30 students each, based on the data shared by Ranoj Pegu.
